A painting by French impressionist Claude Monet that has remained in private hands since 1948 will be auctioned later this month in Paris, Reuters reported, citing auction house Ader.
He expects its price will reach three million euros.
The landscape “The Willows, Giverny” (Les Saules, Giverny), created in 1886, reappears on the French art market, where Monet’s paintings are increasingly rare.
The work is part of an upcoming auction for impressionist and modern art, which will be held on November 24 in the Druot Hall.
“Claude Monet paintings of this scale, with this dimension, no longer exist in French families. They are mostly found in large museums or in foreign collections, but it is very rare to find them in France,” said David Nordmann of the auction house. Ader” to Reuters, quoted by BTA.
“This is a big event for the French market,” he added.

Monet’s oil painting measures 73 by 92 cm. It belonged to a family of Jewish origin and was in their luxury apartment in the center of Paris. The grandfather of the family bought it from a gallery in Nice in 1948 and it has been in the family ever since.
Although not as well-known as Monet’s paintings of water lilies or Saint-Lazare Station, whose prices reach up to 100 million euros, “The Willows, Giverny” has the artist’s signature style.
“This is a typical Claude Monet work,” says Nordmann.
The artist found solace in Giverny, west of Paris, from 1883 until his death in 1926. His house had a Japanese-style garden of flowers and trees set in a water lily pond, the inspiration for many of his paintings.
The work “Portrait of a Young Woman with a White Hat” by the American artist Mary Cassatt will also be offered at auction. It is expected to reach a price between 800 thousand and 1.2 million euros.
