The mysteries of the home healing ritual in Sergi Gyoshev’s new book – Knowledge

--

The long-time journalist in the “Hristo Botev” program published another book with the intriguing title “God will not be angry with me”. In it, the author describes and interprets the folk healing practices through which Bulgarian Christians have dealt with the physical and mental suffering of their neighbors since time immemorial.

The main bearers and keepers of knowledge and a kind of priestesses in the home sanctuary are the female storytellers. For more than four decades, the journalist has collected their stories, wisdom and evidence of deep faith and dedication to charity. They entrust him with their “secret” words and rituals, with which they cure numerous diseases and ailments.

However, it is not the saying of the “magical” formulas and the performance of the rituals that brings healing, the author is convinced, but the personal choice of the person in Whom he trusts and from Whom he seeks support. Denied and reprimanded by the official church, barred from the holy sacraments, female fortune tellers remain faithful to God and it is precisely His image, messages and commandments that shine through in their words and actions, says Goshev.

In addition to the original and brave reading of folk healing rituals, the book contains invaluable documentary material and fabulously beautiful examples of verbal creativity: “A little star went to the earth, then it went up to the sky and looked down mercifully from above… And it threatened the terrible evil and had no mercy for it. And she ran away from God’s tree, chased to a deserted forest, there to eat, there to sleep. Amen!”
