“Welcome by the clothes, send by the mind” said our wise people, but in the context of the most bookish month of the year, April, I will allow myself to interpret with “Welcome by the cover, send by the content”. And the cover is usually decorated with an illustration that can draw the reader’s attention to the book, or on the contrary – refuse to reach for it. This fully applies to children and their attitude to books. Illustrations are the first filter of children’s attention at an early age, they educate aesthetic taste, but also form abstract thinking.

Why are illustrations important in children’s books, what is the impact of visual elements in the text, what should parents know when choosing books with illustrations for their children – we talk to Elena Panayotova about these and other questions. A native of Sliven, an architect by profession, but an artist-illustrator by vocation, she is the author of the illustrations in Maria Doneva’s latest book “The Letter of the Ant”.

For Elena Panayotova – both as an illustrator, but above all as a parent, it is important to offer children variety and the opportunity to form their own taste through the various books we offer them. What else – listen in the attached sound file.
