The district court in Stara Zagora imposed a sentence of six years of “imprisonment”, under an initial general regime of serving, to a 22-year-old man for negligently causing the death of three people and medium bodily harm to two others. This was announced by the press center of the District Court in Stara Zagora.
The accused Velin T. was found guilty that on April 1 in the territory of the municipality of Chirpan, while driving a car, violated the Road Traffic Act and carelessly caused the death of a 13-year-old girl, a 63-year-old man, an 80-year-old woman, as well as moderate bodily injury to two boys, 19 and 15 years.
The injured youths were part of a group that was walking from Chirpan to the village of Zetivo. Most walked along the grassy banquette, and some at the end of a road lane, on the asphalt, in close proximity to the banquette.
After the defendant saw the group, he took a evasive maneuver. Entered the oncoming traffic lane and collided head-on with another car driven by the 63-year-old man and his 80-year-old female companion. After the collision between the two motor vehicles, the vehicle driven by the defendant struck three of the pedestrians.
The criminal proceedings went through a summary trial, and the originally imposed sentence of nine years was reduced by a third. The court applied the procedure after the defendant fully admitted his guilt and the facts and circumstances set forth in the indictment.
In July this year friends and relatives of the dead young girl, 13-year-old Hristiana, gathered in protest in front of the court. Then her relatives demanded a fair trial.
“The accident happened on the first day of the spring break this year. A group of children were walking on the intercity road when a car was moving in the same direction. The driver who was driving the car was traveling at a speed of 108 kilometers per hour, under the speed limit from 70 km/h,” Tanya Stoyanova, the mother of the dead child, told BTA.
