The Spice Girls have reunited, but not in the way fans would have hoped.
The five female performers from the British supergroup sang together, only at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party – Posh Spice.
Celebrities including Tom Cruise, Salma Hayek, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Gordon Ramsay turned up at the party, which was reported to have taken place at the private Oswalds Club in Mayfair.
The icing on the cake, however, was the Spice Girls’ hit song Stop, to which Victoria Beckham, Mel B, Geri Halliwell, Melanie C and Emma Bunton performed the iconic dance.
A video of the performance was uploaded by Victoria’s husband – the former captain of the English national football team David Beckham, who jokingly calls on his wife and her former colleagues to give the song a try.
The birthday girl reposted the video on her own Instagram account with the message: “The best night! Happy birthday to me! I love you all so much” and the hashtag SpiceUpYourLife – a reference to one of the group’s songs when the Spice Girls were among the most the big names in the pop industry.
The performance, while far from the band’s dream reunion, left fans hoping that the Spice Girls might reunite for a performance at the Glastonbury festival.
However, according to British bookmakers, the chances of such a scenario are negligible.
The Spice Girls last reunited in 2019 for a European tour, but then Victoria refused to join them.
Since officially breaking up in 2001, the band has made several other appearances together – the 2007 tour, which grossed $70.1 million in ticket sales alone, and performing at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
For now, at least, Victoria Beckham seems much more committed to her fashion brand and social media presence.
Before her birthday party, she shared a series of photos of her family on her Instagram account.
They show Victoria and David with their four children – Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, as well as Brooklyn’s wife – Nicola Peltz, all dressed in formal suits and ball gowns.
“Can’t wait to celebrate with my family and friends! Love you all so much,” the ex-Spice captioned the post.
