Portofino is the richest municipality in Italy in terms of average annual income per capita. This became clear from the publication of the tax returns in 2023, which concern the income from the previous year. According to them, an average annual income of EUR 90,000 falls per resident. 359 inhabitants live in the small municipality in the Liguria region. Portofino topped the ranking of the richest municipalities after Piersilvio Berlusconi, son of the late former prime minister and billionaire, moved there.

Thus, the small resort in northwestern Italy surpassed the Tuscan village of Laiatico, where the tenor Andrea Bocelli lives. Until two years ago, the municipality located near Pisa with 1,300 inhabitants, of which 965 were taxpayers, was at the top of the ranking for the highest annual income per capita. Now Bocelli’s village is second with 52 thousand euros per year per inhabitant, and third is Basilio, next to Milan. And in the rest of the municipalities, the top 20 richest in Italy are mostly places from Lombardy and Piedmont.

The ranking among large cities with over 120,000 inhabitants is also interesting. Among them, the leader is Milan, with an average annual income of over 35,000 euros per person. Followed by Padua with just under 30 thousand euros, then Parma with 27.7 thousand euros. Rome is also among the top 10 with just over 27,000 euros.

Bottusha’s poorest municipality is located on Lake Como and is called Carvania. Its 87 taxpayers out of a total of 172 residents declare an average annual income of 7,400 euros. This is because they are mostly pensioners.

The average annual income in Italy for 2022 reaches 23,650 euros, which is 4.9% more than the previous year.

The poorest region is Calabria (17,100 euros), and the richest – Lombardy (27,900 euros annual income per person).
