Yesterday’s vote by GERB in the parliamentary legal committee on changes to the Judiciary Act caused a strong reaction from the potential partner for the implementation of the second mandate to form a government “We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria”.

Boyko Borisov’s party, together with the DPS, voted to drop the requirement that the presidents of the Supreme Court and Supreme Court be appointed and dismissed only by decisions of the Plenum of the Judicial Council, made by a majority of representatives of the judicial quota. The amendment was voted along with the reduction of the minimum number of votes needed to appoint and dismiss the so-called three bigwigs in the judiciary – the attorney general and the presidents of the supreme courts. Currently, the required number is 17, but after the adoption of the changes to the two laws, only 13 votes will be needed.

This means that if the deputies finally remove in the plenary hall the requirement that the presidents of the two supreme courts be elected and dismissed by a majority of judges elected as members of the judicial council directly by judges, then the prosecutor’s collegium, which has 11 people and two members of the advice issued by Parliament will be enough to make key decisions in the two Supreme Courts.

“From the PP-DB we will not close our eyes to the outrages in the legal commission and to the mutilation of the texts of the “Petkov” cabinet, of Nadezhda Yordanova and Krum Zarkov, especially the transitional provisions of the NPC to the Law on the Judiciary. From the government with the second term there are meaning only if the laws, which have been on the agenda for a long time and are needed by Bulgarian society, are voted on in the way they were intended, and not crippled with false arguments,” the coalition’s position states.

On the sidelines of the parliament, draft prime minister Nikolay Denkov said that he did not know whether he would like to continue in the direction of creating a cabinet with a rotating prime minister, if such things were to happen.

“If we start changing the texts again and passing laws that will not achieve real justice reform, I don’t know if I want to continue in that direction. I found out yesterday afternoon about what happened in the legal committee, so give us some time to we see what’s happening on the other side as well,” he said.

“For us, the government is not at all costs, especially with you,” Lena Borislavova said on Facebook, adding part of the position of “We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria”.
