In 2022, 9.4 million people in the EU will work as information and communication technology (ICT) professionals, representing 4.6% of the total EU workforce, Eurostat analysis shows.
The share of ICT professionals in the EU has been growing over the last decade, increasing by 1.4 percentage points (p.p.) since 2012.
Among EU countries, the share of ICT specialists is highest in Sweden (8.6 percent), followed by Luxembourg (7.7 percent) and Finland (7.6 percent). The lowest shares are observed in Greece (2.5 percent), Romania (2.8 percent) and Poland (3.6 percent).
From 2012 to 2022, the number of ICT professionals in the EU grew by 57.8 percent, which is almost 6.6 times the growth rate of employment (+8.8 percent).
The share of women working as ICT professionals saw a slight decline in 2022 compared to 2021 (18.9 percent vs. 19.1 percent), breaking the upward trend seen since 2014 .
Among the EU countries, the largest share of women among employed ICT specialists is observed in Bulgaria (28.9 percent), Romania (25.2 percent) and Estonia (24.5 percent), and the smallest – in the Czech Republic (10.9 percent) and Hungary (13.6 percent).
