The growth in excise revenue is due to the greatest extent to the higher receipts from excise for tobacco and tobacco products and to the increased economic activity of taxable persons. A positive trend from the last two months has also been observed in the receipts from excise tax for gasoline and gas oil exempted for consumption.
In the nine months of 2023, revenues from excise duty for tobacco and tobacco products amounted to BGN 2,430.7 million and marked an increase of 8.7% (BGN 195.0 million) over the declared BGN 2,235.7 million in the period January – September 2022.
During the period, receipts at the Customs Agency from excise duty on alcohol, alcoholic beverages and beer compared to the period January – September 2022 increased by BGN 6.4 million or 2.6%. Revenues from excise duty for fuels during the reporting period was BGN 1,844.3 million, 1.7% (BGN 31.4 million) below the collected BGN 1,875.6 million in the same period of 2022. It is expected that the backlog generated in the first six months will be compensated by the end of the year.
In the month of September 2023, the total revenues administered by the Customs Agency amounted to BGN 1,188.1 million. In the nine months from the beginning of 2023, the Customs Agency collected revenues from excise duty, import VAT, duties, fines and others. in the amount of BGN 9,274.4 million.
