After a staggering 19 consecutive victories in all competitions since the start of the season, Fenerbahçe suffered their first defeat of the current campaign. The Istanbul giant lost 2:3 as a host in its clash with Trabzonspor from the 11th round of the Turkish elite. This defeat of his comes a few days before his visit to Razgrad of the Bulgarian champion Ludogorets in the match between them from the League of Conferences.
It was the “Lanterns” who controlled the initiative throughout the match, but despite this they surprisingly trailed by 0:3 in the result, reports Sportal. The visitors took the lead in the 10th minute when Paul Onuachu headed in Edin Vischa’s cross. At the very beginning of the second half, their lead was doubled after a great long shot by Berat Özdemir. In the 47th minute, another goal was scored for Trabzonspor. Then Nicolas Pepe successfully completed his team’s counterattack with a powerful shot.
In the 61st minute, the home team reduced their deficit thanks to a perfectly executed penalty by Dusan Tadic, who won it himself after a foul by Mehmet Ayden. In the 78th minute, Fenerbahçe were further hampered after Ismail Yuksek’s second yellow card and red card respectively, who committed a gross violation against Trezeguet. However, shortly before the end of regular time, the Blue and Yellows were awarded the right to take a second penalty after another foul on Ayden in the penalty area, this time on Miguel Crespo. Tadic again took on the execution from the penalty spot, but this time he rattled the crossbar. However, the penalty was awarded due to a hasty entry into the penalty area by an opposing player. Thus, from his second attempt, Tadic was flawless for 2:3. In stoppage time, Ennis Destan’s goal was disallowed by VAR for a foul in Trezeguet’s attack, but his side celebrated the ultimate success anyway.
Because of this loss, Fenerbahce lost the first place in the standings to Galatasaray and is now in the second position with 30 points, or just one less than the new leader. Trabzonspor is in fourth place with 19 points, the same number as fifth-placed Besiktas before Sunday’s match of the round.
