Baba Vida fortress was closed to visitors due to a collapse in the inner courtyard.
The order came from the acting mayor of Vidin municipality, after the Regional History Museum was the first to signal the problem.
“Now the danger is greater, because right above the threshold of the vault of the inner courtyard there is a huge stone, which can be seen to be split off, that is, the mortar that holds it is already missing, and this becomes extremely dangerous, because this is where the main flow of visitors passes “, said Hristina Kirilova, director of RIM-Vidin.
The medieval fortress Baba Vida is the most visited historical site in Vidin.
For years, the museum has been warning about the need for restoration, but so far only emergency repairs have been carried out on two of the towers in the fortress.
“There’s just no way to put up some safety ropes or tapes and go around them. The visiting route is the same, and the compromised and dangerous sections that I’ve seen right now are exactly on the route that he’s supposed to go one visitor,” said Yulian Petrov, acting mayor of Vidin municipality.
At the end of August, part of the outer fortress wall of “Baba Vida” fell, but the section was not part of the tourist route and access to the site was not closed. Now the danger of collapse is in the inner courtyard where all the visitors pass.
In September, after a meeting at the Ministry of Culture, the Municipality was given a seven-day deadline to look for a construction engineer and prepare an opinion on emergency strengthening.
