The Regional Health Inspectorate (RHI) in Targovishte has started a study to assess the volumetric activity of radon in public buildings – kindergartens in the Targovishte region. The study is in implementation of the activities of the National Action Plan to reduce the risk of radon exposure 2023-2027, the health inspectorate specified.
Health officials explain that radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium decays in soil, rocks and water, from where it enters the air. Radon quickly breaks down into radioactive particles that are deposited on airborne particles.
According to experts, radon can travel long distances in the soil, reach the surface and the air, and enter buildings through: the foundation of the building – through cracks in the floor; cavities in the inner walls; channels; the water supply network; building materials; water. Experts add that radon can be reduced by regular ventilation of the premises.
In the air, radon quickly breaks down into particles that are inhaled and deposited in the respiratory tract, which can cause serious damage to health. This is precisely why it is important to examine the buildings.
The only way to find out what the radon concentration is in a building is to conduct a specialized study by installing detectors. It is carried out in all habitable rooms on and below the first level of the building. The detector is not dangerous. It does not emit ionizing radiation or any other type of radiation. It measures part of the natural radiation background.
The detectors are processed in the “Radon” testing laboratory at the National Center for Radiobiology and Radiation Protection in Sofia.
All parents and teachers will be informed of the results after the survey is completed, assures the team of RZI – Targovishte.
