A rare pregnancy: a woman with a double uterus is expecting twins – carrying a baby in each

A woman from the US state of Alabama, born with a double uterus, is carrying a baby in each, AFP reported.

Kelsey Hatcher, who is 32 years old, tells her story on her Instagram account. She has known since the age of 17 that her uterus has two cavities.

It is estimated that about 0.3% of women experience this.

During a routine ultrasound examination in May, the woman, who is already a mother of three, learned that she was not only pregnant with twins, but also that each fetus had its own uterus, BTA reported.

“We were shocked! During the first ultrasound, we laughed a lot,” she wrote on her Instagram profile.

“Most likely ovulation occurred separately and one egg came down each fallopian tube, they went to both sides of the uterus,” after which each was fertilized, Shweta Patel, an obstetrician- gynecologist. She cares for Hatcher at the Alabama State University Mother and Child Center in Birmingham.

A double uterus is often associated with a high risk of complications, but the American woman’s first three children were born healthy and full-term.

Pregnancy in both uteri is extremely rare.

Hatcher claims that according to doctors, the chance of such a thing happening is one in 50 million.

The most famous case was in Bangladesh in 2019, when Arifa Sultana, then 20, gave birth to two healthy babies 26 days apart.

Kelsey Hatcher is hoping to give birth to “babies A and B” naturally on her expected Christmas due date. Both fetuses are doing very well at the moment.

However, she may experience contractions in both uteruses at different times, minutes, hours or even days apart. Kelsey and her husband, Caleb, know that one or both babies may need a C-section.
