
Seventh-graders from “Nikola Simov” Sports School in Targovishte participated in the first edition of “Reading Day in Bulgaria”. The team of the “Peter Stupov” Regional Library in the regional city also participated in the initiative. The meeting with the books and the future athletes was the idea of the class teacher Denislava Yordanova, she told a BTA reporter.
Today, library representatives have diversified the class time of seventh graders to emphasize the importance of literacy and the benefits of reading. Thanks to the librarian, the young people had the opportunity to look at thematic books specially prepared for them. To leaf through old editions of sports newspapers with curious news from the recent past. The students also got acquainted with books about Nikola Simov – Kuruto, whose name the school bears, as well as with a newspaper published on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the educational institution, Yordanova said.
The first Day of Reading in Bulgaria is organized by the foundations “Reading” and “Children’s Books” and by the association “Books and Reading” with the support of “Stiftung Lesen” – Germany. Partners of the initiative are the “Global Libraries – Bulgaria” Foundation, the Bulgarian Library and Information Association, the “Bulgarian Book” Association, “Az Cheta”, “Bookmark” and “Slaveykov Square”, added the regional library.
The teacher of Bulgarian language and literature explained that he decided to register the school and the class in the national initiative, guided by his conviction that reading is useful. The purpose of the different lesson, in which specialists from the cultural institution also participated, was for young people to rediscover the benefits of the book. The goal is to develop critical thinking, to learn new words, to increase literacy,” Yordanova added.
Reading is the basis of functional literacy, Yordanova is convinced, and that is why she is looking for different forms to popularize it among students. They shared their impressions of the meeting, of their visits to the library and promised to visit the institution in the spring of next year.
The motto of a campaign that aims to take reading to a new level is “Reading gives opportunities!”
