There are over 150 premature children born in UMBL – Burgas since the beginning of the year

The Department of Neonatology of the University General Hospital for Active Treatment (UMBAL) – Burgas welcomed today’s World Day of Premature Children with 11 patients in need of special care and attention due to low weight and premature birth. This was announced by the press center of the hospital.
Six of the babies weigh less than a pound and a half and are highly immature. The smallest patient currently being cared for in the department weighs 770 grams and was born at 26 weeks of pregnancy.
Dr. Stiliyana Tomova, head of the Department of Neonatology at UMBAL – Burgas informed that by November 1 of this year 158 premature babies passed through the department – more than any other hospital in the district and the most difficult medical cases. Two of the children were referred from other medical facilities. Seventeen of the babies were the most severe first and second degree of prematurity – ie. weight up to a kilogram and a half. In the previous year, 2022, the department cared for 169 premature children.
The neonatology of UMBAL – Burgas has the third, highest level of competence. Six doctors work there – pediatricians and neonatologists, and three specialists in neonatology, and the equipment meets the most modern European and world standards, mostly thanks to donors.
BTA reminds that the Department of Neonatology has a family room where parents of premature babies can spend time with their children. The department is also a training base for specialists.
