Kinomania started in Varna today and will continue until November 30, according to the hosts from the Festival and Congress Center. The opening film is The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan, a co-production of France, Germany, Spain and Belgium. The action takes place in 1627, when France is on the verge of a religious war. Another film adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novel is by Martin Bourboulon and has the ambitious task of popularizing the romantic epic among the younger generation with a carefully touched image, suitable action and a superb cast that includes Francois Civil, Vincent Cassel, Romain Duris, Pio Marmay, Eva Green , Louis Garrel.
The premiere of the Italian-Belgian film I, Captain is coming, which has a Silver Lion for directing and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Seydoux Sarr’s Rising Actor from the Venice Film Festival, as well as the Audience Award for Best European Film in San Sebastian.
Actress Helen Mirren takes on the role of Golda Meir, previously played by Ingrid Bergman on television and by Anne Bancroft on stage. The new adaptation of the leader’s life is by Guy Nativ and is titled “Golda Meir: The Iron Lady of Israel.”
Another famous person is dedicated to Quentin Dupuillot’s film “Daaaaali!”. In the plot, a journalist seeks an exclusive interview with the artist Salvador Dali. The director says he cast several brilliant actors for his character and used Luis Buñuel’s memories from which he took images and ideas.
Kinomania in Varna will also show the fourth directorial project of Vincent Peres “A Question of Honor”, which won the audience award at the festival in Karlovy Vary. He tells about the duels that were practiced at the end of the 19th century in Paris, even though they were forbidden.
The festival will also offer director Nani Moretti’s new film Bright Future, in which he returns to comedy to present a global vision through the Italian perspective of the turbulent social events of the 1950s.
Michael Caine stars in Oliver Parker’s The Great Fugitive. The film tells the story of 80-year-old Bernie Jordan, who in the summer of 2014 organized an escape from a nursing home to join veterans on the beaches of Normandy for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the memory of their fallen comrades.
The Varna audience will be able to see again the French film “Anatomy of a Fall”, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year and closed this year’s “Love is Madness” festival. The program also includes documentary tapes. They are dedicated to the musician Carlos Santana, the Italian actor and director Massimo Troisi, who died at only 41 years old after playing the main role in “The Postman”, as well as to ecology – “Whales, guardians of the planet”. The feature-length animation “They Shot the Pianist” by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal will also be shown.
Kinomania recalls Franco Zeffirelli’s film-operas on the occasion of his 100th anniversary. In Varna, “Pagliacci” and “La Traviata” from 1982 and “Othello” from 1986 will be shown. The music in “La Traviata” was performed by the orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera conducted by James Levine and has a Grammy award for the best a good opera recording. The tape is BAFTA Awarded for Costume Design and Artist. In the production of Leoncavallo’s opera “Pagliacci”, the action was transferred by the director to the period between the First and Second World Wars. It was filmed at La Scala. The film was screened out of competition at Cannes in 1987, and Zeffirelli received an Emmy Award for Best Director in the Classical Music Programming category. Placido Domingo is in the title role in “Pagliacci” and “Othello”.
