The minister should not be a scapegoat for the problems in the Bulgarian Football Union. This was stated by Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov at a briefing after the pogrom of the protest in front of the Vasil Levski National Stadium.
“Thousands of employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs did their job. If I resign, it means betraying them,” he added.
“We witnessed an unprecedented pogrom in the center of Sofia. Only the adequate reaction of the officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Gendarmerie thwarted damage and casualties. I am surprised at the request for my resignation,” Kalin Stoyanov also commented.
“There is no police that stands idly by. The actions taken last night by the officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Gendarmerie are reciprocal to the aggression from the fans,” added the minister.
He also addressed the allegations of where he was during the protest. “I haven’t been to a pub or a disco. At what movie screening – MIA is a consultant on a movie about phone scams, which will soon be in theaters. This is a serious problem for Bulgarian society. My presence was for work, not to have fun,” commented Kalin Stoyanov.
He also added that he was in constant contact with the chief secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and operatives at the protest site.
Stoyanov is adamant that the situation in front of the national stadium could have developed much worse if the Ministry of Interior officials had not done their job.
