The long-awaited sports news is officially a fact! Bulgaria won a historic first title at the European Team Chess Championship in Budva, Montenegro. Our national team, in composition Antoineta Stefanova, Nurgyul Salimova, Victoria Radeva, Gergana Peycheva and Beloslava Krastevaachieved the spectacular success with 16 points – seven wins, two draws and no losses.
Bulgaria beat #1 seeded Georgia!
In the last ninth round, our players defeated the Georgian team, ranked number 1 in the scheme and runner-up from the last Chess Olympiad, 2.5:1.5. Antoaneta Stefanova and Gergana Peycheva scored victories. Nurgyul Salimova scored a draw, and Beloslava Krasteva lost, but it hardly matters.

In the first game, Salimova and Nino Batiashvili settled for a draw. The Bulgarian, who finished second at the World Cup earlier in the year, managed to get the job done and hold the fort with the black pieces.

About an hour later, Antoineta Stefanova also finished her game – with a victory against Bella Hotenashvili on the first board! Thus, our country managed to lead Georgia in the overall result by 1.5:0.5 points, coming within one draw of the European title in chess.

Gergana Peycheva recorded a memorable success
Unfortunately, Beloslava Krasteva lost to Salome Melia and everything depended on the final duel between Gergana Peycheva and Lela Javakhishvili. The party was extremely exciting and filled with several twists and turns. Just when our girl looked lost, she showed extreme intransigence and eventually not only tied the game, but cruised to victory after nearly 6 hours of play, forcing Javakhashvili to surrender on the 83rd move. Gergana’s victory came after her opponent took out a second queen with a passing pawn, but our girl was ahead and with a knight-queen-pawn combination put the black king in an unsalvageable position:
