The sports news of the day – Bulgaria conquered Europe! Our national team triumphed at the Old Continent Championship in Budva, Montenegro. In an interview after the conquest of the historic hill, the former world champion Antoinette Stefanova revealed when we last participated in a European team championship.
After many years of absence, Bulgaria is back on the European stage
“I’ve always dreamed of let’s win as a team. So far, the most we have achieved as a team was fourth place at the Olympics many years ago. We are here with a wild card. Basically we are not allowed to be here as we are not a member of the European Chess Union. Many people know the problems of Bulgarian chess. For years we didn’t have the right to be in Europe. After 10 years, we are here again,” explained Stefanova to the bTV colleagues.

In her last triumph, Stefanova could not hear the national anthem
“In 2017, I was last on the podium individually at the World Intellectual Games in China – both rapid and blitz. Unfortunately, that was the height of scandals in Bulgarian chess and we were not a member of FIDE. That’s why I didn’t hear our anthem, and that of FIDE,” said she, who was able to hear the national anthem this time.
At the ceremony, she was individually awarded Nurgyul Salimova, who is in first place in the second boards (read details in the link).
