From January 1, food vouchers become electronic, and consumers will be able to shop with a card, but by July they will also be available on paper. 750 thousand workers in Bulgaria receive food bonuses every month. According to the Association of Food Stamp Operators, there are about 20,000 employers who provide these supplements to their employees. According to their calculations, BGN 1.6-1.8 billion will be enough for vouchers for next year, given the market.

“Electronic vouchers can be both on a card and on a completely virtual medium – for example, a mobile application. This will depend on the choice of each operator and issuer of vouchers,” explained Tanya Ovoshtarova from the Association of Food Voucher Operators.

“Every year, a general quota is determined in the state budget – for the total volume of vouchers that can be provided by employers. This year’s quota is BGN 1.4 billion. As for the moment, the draft budget provides that it will remain the same. According to our calculations, this will not be enough for the needs of the market next year,” she pointed out.

“You will be able to buy goods at whatever value you wish. Even for 2-3 BGN you can buy something. While at the moment you have to use the entire nominal value of the voucher”, Ovoshtarova also said.
