Burgas children with disabilities are happy to show you their paintings The gramophone

On 22.11.2023, Wednesday, from 5:30 p.m., in the lobby of the Cultural Center of the National Cultural Center, the team and graduates of the Day Center for Children with Disabilities “St. Nikolay the Wonderworker”, managed by the Municipality of Burgas, present an exhibition on the theme “Magical World”.

The paintings were made during the activities of the social services “Day care” and “Support for the acquisition of work skills” in the Day Center, directed and supported by the occupational therapist Daniela Ilieva.

In the exhibition there is everything – flowers, sea motifs, animals, fairy-tale characters such as the Little Prince and the Magic Fairy, the Three Nymphs, the predominant object of interpretation are houses, depicted in a wonderful way. Each picture has its own magical radiance.

This second solo exhibition will present three applied art techniques used in the occupational therapy office. The first two – with torn leaves and seed paintings – are traditional for the Day Center and have been used since its creation in 2000. The third technique – sea pebble paintings – has been applied since 2017.

For 23 years, the Day Center for Children with Disabilities “St. Nikolay Chudotvorets” provides a complex of social services and activities to improve the quality of life of children and youth with specific needs and to achieve their social integration.

The complex of social services in the Day Center is for children from the age of 4 to the completion of secondary education. In order to achieve the best possible results in meeting the needs of children/youth with disabilities, their parents and families are involved in the process of planning and implementing services. Children and families are directed to the services with a preliminary assessment of the needs of social services from the “Child Protection” Department and the “People with Disabilities and Social Services” Department at the “Social Assistance” Directorate – Burgas.

The Day Center mainly accepts children with motor and sensory disorders, such as cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, multiple disabilities, autism, etc., as well as children with intellectual deficits. At the moment, 25 children and young people are served there.

Day center for children with disabilities “St. Nikolay Chutotvorets” to the Municipality of Burgas implements the complex of social services through various activities for comprehensive service of children and young people during the day, which are related to meeting daily needs, health, educational and rehabilitation needs, nutrition, as well as organization of free time with full respecting the rights, opportunities and needs of each user.

The activities through which the social services “Day care”, “Therapy and rehabilitation”, “Training for the acquisition of skills”, “Support for the acquisition of work skills”, “Information and counseling (specialized)”, “Advocacy and mediation” are carried out , are related to providing:

• Motor rehabilitation;

• Speech therapy;

• Psychological therapy;

• Trainings for acquiring life skills for an independent and independent life;

• Ensuring rational and healthy nutrition;

• Assistance in meeting daily activities;

• Conducting occupational therapy and art therapy;

• School training according to programs of the Ministry of Education and Science, prepared for the needs of the Center for special educational support and mass general education school;

• Conducting cultural and recreational activities during free time for children/youth with disabilities, including outdoor walks;

• Psychological, social and medical counseling of the parents/guardians/custodians or caregivers of the children.

In order to support the parents of the children/youths, daily Specialized transport for persons with reduced mobility to “Burgasbus” transports the children with disabilities from their homes to the building of the DCSU “St. Nicholas the Wonderworker” and vice versa, which is carried out according to schedule.

During the past 23 years at the Day Center for Children with Disabilities “St. Nikolay Chudotvorets” have passed dozens of children aged 5 to 20, who grew up and gained social skills and confidence under the care of specialists – social worker, speech therapist, psychologist, occupational therapist and rehabilitator.
