The largest student sports Olympiad in Bulgaria, organized by the “Olympics” sports club at the American University in Bulgaria, took place this weekend in Blagoevgrad. The event was attended by students, teachers and employees of AUBG, sports enthusiasts from Blagoevgrad and the region, together with their families.The Olympics included 18 sports, football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, table tennis, swimming, and other athletics, as well as typical American sports such as American folk ball and spikeball. Today’s Sunday is the so-called “Big Day” (D-Day), and was held at the “Porter Park” baseball field at the “Bachinovo” park. 12 different sports were held today. The event ended with an award ceremony by the Bulgarian swimming record holder Petar Mitsin and with the special presence of the football legend of Blagoevgrad Dimitar Berbatov, who awarded the participants in the football tournament. The native star in a good mood, signed autographs and took pictures with everyone who wanted to. Despite the rain and wetness of the pitches, the races did not stop. Besides a focus on sports, the event also has a social focus. The charitable cause this year is in support of the “National Paralympic Organization”. The event also included a green initiative with “Eco Partners Bulgaria”, which provided facilities for recycling plastic bottles and jugs. The caps collected will be donated to Caps for the Future.
