The Holy Synod is meeting at a meeting to approve the list of eligible bishops for the upcoming elections for a new Sliven Metropolitan, which are scheduled for May 19, BNR reports.

For the second time, the Sliven Diocese will hold elections for its new bishop after the death of Metropolitan Ioanikiy in January.

The second election for the Metropolitan of Sliven was reached after the elections were canceled on February 18, due to a complaint and a report received in the Holy Synod, which the synod has not yet formalized.

The Agathopol Bishop Hierotheus received the most votes then.

On the occasion of today’s meeting of the metropolitans, Metropolitan Ioan of Varna and Veliko Preslav, who took over the management of the Metropolitanate of Sliven after the death of Metropolitan Ioanikiy, stated: “The situation was one before the death of His Holiness, when he assigned me. The situation after his death is different. There is now a clear horizon of choice,” comments Ioan.

In addition to the fact that Metropolitan John became the temporary deputy of the widowed throne of the Sliven Metropolitanate, the Synod assigned him to conduct an audit in the Sliven Diocese and to revise the list of diocesan voters.

Regarding the results of the inspection so far, the metropolitan answered: “It takes time, it also requires serious preparation. So whatever is ready – will be, whatever is not – may God grant that the newly elected metropolitan will continue it.”
