100 years since the death of the great composer

“The Mantle” and “Gianni Skiki” on April 22, “Sister Angelica” on April 24, 7 p.m., Varna State Opera, XXIII Easter Music Festival – Varna 2024
In the year when the world marks 100 years since the death of Giacomo Puccini, the Varna Opera presents his famous Triptych The Mantle, Gianni Schicchi and Sister Angelica with a production at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, Italy and in continuation of the partnership with The National Opera and Ballet of Albania. The audience will be able to hear the genius composer’s three one-act operas pre-première, on April 22 and 24, in a concert performance, conducted by Jacopo Cipari di Pescaceroli.

To Giacomo Puccini belongs the phrase “It is obligatory for every spectacle that it should surprise, move or make you laugh.” In his Triptych, the composer follows the principle by interweaving all these elements into one work composed of three one-act operas. A month after the end of the First World War, the dramatic “Mantle”, the lyrical “Sister Angelica” and the comic “Gianni Squeaky” premiered in New York. Although the stylistic-genre contrast with three different eras, three locations, three moods is dramaturgically embedded in the Triptych, the trilogy is conceived as a whole.

The plot of “Mantle” is a love story with a tragic ending that takes place in romantic Paris. “Sister Angelica” takes viewers to a convent in the 17th century, where a girl is imprisoned for giving birth to a child out of wedlock. The main character in the comic opera “Gianni Scicchi” is involved in forging the will of a rich man, and the action takes place in Florence.
Criticism has drawn parallels between Dante’s Divine Comedy (“Inferno”, “Purgatory” and “Paradise”) and Puccini’s Triptych (“The Mantle”, “Sister Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi”). Puccini was indeed inspired by Dante, as well as by his interest in French literature and theatre, particularly the Grand Guignol, where short plays in contrasting styles and genres were often performed on the same evening. The composer moves from the negative to the positive, from darkness to light, from despair to bliss, from hopelessness to optimism. All three operas are in one act only, with no change of scene; the motif of death is present in all; all three have as a secondary plan an escape from the circumstances in search of a new and better life. The triptych was the last completed work by Giacomo Puccini, who died before finalizing Turandot.
