Nikolay Grjazin brought a historic first win for Bulgaria in the World Rally Championship (WRC) after winning the WRC2 race at Rally Croatia.
The Bulgarian-licensed driver recorded 11 stage wins over the course of the race, in which his main rival was DG Sport team-mate Ioan Rosell, but the naturalized Bulgarian overtook him by 38.2 seconds.
“It’s a very nice feeling, especially after the work we did before the race. I thank the whole team. They didn’t leave me at any moment and gave me the push I needed. I thank my navigator the most because the sections were difficult,” said Gryazin , quoted by wrc.com.
The podium in WRC2 was completed by Pepe Lopez, who had a spin during the race that left him more than a minute behind the leaders, but still managed to work his way into the top three.
In the WRC2 general classification, the leader after the first four rounds of the 2024 season is Oliver Solberg with 43 points, the same as Yoan Rossel. Nikolay Gryazin occupies a temporary third position with 40 points.
Otherwise, in the main race in the “Croatia” rally, eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier deserved the triumph, who beat his Toyota teammate Elfin Evans by 9.7 seconds. Thierry Neuville finished third in a Hyundai, after the Belgian remained 45.8 seconds behind the winner.
In the standings, Neuville remains in the lead with 86 points, followed by Evans with 80, while third is the Frenchman Adrien Fourmault, who has 59 points
