April 22 was officially celebrated as Earth Day for the first time in 1990, when an initiative committee chaired by Dennis Hayes (USA) started an active action to protect nature. That same year, Earth Day was celebrated by more than 200 million people in 141 countries. National offices to coordinate the events dedicated to this day have been established in the USA, Canada, Japan, France, China, Russia, Sweden and many other countries.
Over the past years, Earth Day – April 22, has become the biggest holiday in the world, celebrated by more than half a billion people. Bulgaria was among the first countries in the world, which already in 1990 joined the celebration of April 22 with various initiatives dedicated to the protection of nature.
