Cervical disc herniation

The neck consists of 7 vertebrae that start at the base of the skull. In the middle of each vertebra is the spinal cord, which is an extension of the brain. The sensations that return to the brain from the different parts of the body or the orders that are sent from the brain to the body pass through the spinal cord. In the neck area, the nerves that exit at the level of the vertebral bodies spread to the arms and back, enabling sensation and movement in these areas.

The disc tissue, which is called the intervertebral cushion, has an outer part (annulus fibrosus) and an inner part (nucleus pulposus). A cervical herniation occurs when the gelatinous inner part causes the outer part, which is made up of stronger connective tissue, to tear and compresses the spinal cord and nerves.

What are the reasons?

The main difference with a lumbar hernia is that partial or complete weakness occurs throughout the body, as a result of pressure exerted not only on the nerves, but also on the spinal cord itself. Since the spinal cord is interrupted at the level of the first lumbar vertebra and only nerves in the lower part of the lumbar vertebrae reach the legs, the paralysis is in the area where a certain nerve is distributed in the herniated disc.

What are the factors that cause a cervical herniated disc?
Some incorrect actions that we perform in our daily life can first manifest as pain and stiffness of the neck muscles, then a hernia suddenly appears. Here are some of the causes:

• Falling asleep in front of the TV
• Going outside with wet hair
• Carrying weights on the shoulders or back without balance
• Travel with an open window
• Long period of working at a computer or desk

Is the onset of a cervical herniated disc work-related? Are there certain professions where it occurs more often?

As with all work-related diseases, cervical herniated discs are most common in people who work at a desk, movers and those who are frequently exposed to trauma.
