On April 27, at 6:00 p.m., the premiere of the newest title in the cultural institute’s repertoire will take place in the Nikola Vaptsarov Drama Theater – “The Infanta’s Birthday” by Oscar Wilde. The dramatization and direction are the work of Todor Valov, the scenography and costumes are made by Natalia Gocheva, and the music is by Plamen Mirchev-Mirona.

The performance includes: Lora Hristova, Katya Ivanova, Nedilyana Pavlik, Pepa Maneva, Aladin Aliibrahim, Dimitar Stoinov, Teodor Kukov, Alexander Mitev.

A few days before the premiere of “The Birthday of the Infanta” in a special interview with “Focusdirector Todor Valov said that like all of Oscar Wilde’s tales, this one deals with the problems of the human psyche.

“In this story, I personally see the problem of how cruelty and heartlessness towards the surrounding world can be brought up in a child. This is what excites me most about The Infanta’s Birthday. The performance is suitable for children over 7 years of age. Younger children will not be able to perceive the problem, rather they will follow the plot narrative. For a more in-depth follow up of the story, I think it’s for kids ages 7 and up, including adults. I would even say that it is a family show, because really the problem that is posed in The Infanta’s Birthday is really a problem that adults have to think about,” he added.

Valov expressed hope that together with the whole team they managed to make such a performance that educates not only in the moral-spiritual aspect, which deals with the theme of the story and the performance, but also purely artistically, visually and aesthetically.

“The scenography is by Natalia Gocheva, with whom I have created quite a few shows in Bulgaria and abroad. The performance is with masks and with elements of costumes that are actually movable, changing, that is, we have brought the performance into an aesthetic that is subordinate to the form, which is determined by the appearance – by the mask, by the costume, that is, the actors on the stage they will look like living dolls,” he added.

Laura Hristova is the actress who will be seen in the role of the birthday girl. She shared about “Focus“that for her the whole performance is an extraordinary journey.

“The masks – they dictate through their means of expression, through their gesture. We paid a lot of attention to detail. I think it is very important to visually maintain the whole picture, this whole tale, which also hides its very deep meaning. The role is very interesting and it is important for me to be an advocate for the role in question. Speaking of cruelty, it was important for me to find both the good and the light in the dark and asking the question – where does this cruelty come from, to unfold the answer and what leads to it and that actually behind every evil there is a lot of pain, and a lot of truth, which should not be overlooked,” she added.

Dimitar Stoinov and we will see in the role of the Dwarf. About his character, he told “Focus” that it is an ugly and ugly dwarf, but only in appearance.

“Inwardly, it is very childishly naive and pure to such an extent that it is in no way aware of the mockery, mockery of others, the way they perceive and see it. He has no sense of such things. It assumes that the Infanta really likes him, that she may even be in love with him. It falls in love with her itself. This is definitely the good character. And throughout the show, one of the messages we want to get across to kids and their parents is that we shouldn’t use other people’s differences to try to make them vulnerable. We have to fight against the negative things,” he pointed out.

According to director Todor Valov, the Dwarf is actually a victim of both love and cruelty.

“He is that litmus through which the whole philosophy of this tale passes. Usually in life this type of people, people who have a pure and vulnerable soul, often become a victim both literally and figuratively. He is the check for those around him,” he emphasized.
