The trial is related to the most complicated and ugly extortion – it began today, will continue on May 13, the defense will make new evidentiary requests

After numerous dismissals of judges and prosecutors from Varna, the case of extortion against the owner of a chain of gas stations and pharmacies, former deputy speaker of the parliament and leader of PP “Volya” Veselin Mareshki ended up in Burgas. Today, the trial was started, but at the request of the defense, it will continue at the next session, as Mareshki’s lawyer insisted on new evidentiary requests.

This is what Veselin Mareshki said to Flagman.bg on his way out of the hall:

I heard another brutal lie that the prosecutor from Varna told without batting an eye. He was sent here from Varna only for this case. According to him, I used as intermediaries some criminals who were actually associates of those who are currently accusing me, which is ultimately absurd. The friends of those who accuse me are criminals! All the other lies that have been told in the case are similar to this oneMareshki said.

In the spring of 2022, Veselin Mareshki was sentenced to four years in prison by the Court of Appeal in Varna. Together with him, Krasimira Koleva was also indicted, who was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. According to the indictment, in the period from October 9 to November 16, 2014, Mareshki and Koleva blackmailed businessman Asen Milanov into paying them rent of BGN 10,000 for his pizzeria in Varna. The problem in this case is that the property was not theirs. Milanov, for his part, had a rental arrangement with Tony D., with whom he also had contractual relations.

Asen Milanov is the ex-husband of Krasimira Koleva. The prosecutor’s office claims that after the businesswoman failed to get back the property through court after their divorce, she sought assistance from Veselin Mareshki. The state prosecution explains Mareshki’s intervention with the fact that Krasimira Koleva owed BGN 65,000 to Mareshki’s legal wife. According to the indictment, he got involved so he could get his money back.

After Milanov refused to pay rent to the two defendants, they took retaliatory actions. Complaints were filed and checks were initiated on the legality of an external structure built, which increased the area of the establishment, which led to its demolition. Subsequently, at the request of Krasimira Koleva, the electricity supply to the site was also cut off.

Then Asen Milanov turned for help to the leader of PP “Vazrazhdane” and municipal councilor in Varna Kostadin Kostadinov. The tenant of the pizzeria hoped that Kostadinov could help him resolve the conflict with Mareshki.

On October 15, 2014, after a scandal in the street, the leader of Volya resorted to physical violence. Mareshki was detained by the police and accused of beating Kostadinov. In this case, Mareshki was convicted for the first time in 2020. However, then the Supreme Court found violations and returned the materials for a new examination. Thus, for several years the case traveled through court corridors, and judges refused to hear it. That is why it was sent to Burgas. A seconded prosecutor from Varna and an assistant prosecutor from the Burgas Appellate Prosecutor’s Office support the prosecution. The trial will continue on May 13.
