A 17-year-old boy is the first infected with whooping cough in the Veliko Tarnovo region this year, the Regional Health Inspectorate announced.

The young man, who has been confirmed to have pertussis at the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, has been vaccinated and the illness is mild.

The 17-year-old is receiving treatment at home, Dr. Evgenia Nedeva, director of the RZI-Veliko Tarnovo, told BNR.

His contact classmates from Veliko Tarnovo school are under medical supervision.

Anti-epidemic measures such as frequent ventilation and disinfection of surfaces are widespread.

Vaccination is the main preventive measure against whooping cough, health authorities remind.

The report of RZI Veliko Tarnovo for 2022 and 2023 shows that the level of immunization and reimmunization against the disease in the region is above the national average.

Checks are carried out with GPs on the scope of whooping cough immunizations.

A little earlier, the director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, Prof. Iva Hristova, explained in a TV interview that whooping cough is a serious disease – “the mortality rate reaches 2-4% and it is no accident that the vaccine is in the mandatory immunization calendar”.

“Obviously there is a hidden morbidity because the source of the infection cannot be detected. Sick people spread the bacteria already in the incubation period – even before symptoms appear. If it is caught in the first week, the treatment will have an effect and these attacks will be missed of coughing. But if this period is missed and ten days pass, the unvaccinated persons have severe attacks – convulsions and convulsions, which lead to the inability to breathe,” explained the expert.
