“All day we sat with friends in the store, on the bench in front of the store. At one point we saw the column of caterpillars. The children started stepping on them. I tried to remove them from the entrance of the store with a broom,” said the victim.
According to her, she then realized that because the children had stepped on them, a toxic poison had spread.
“At one point, we all caught fire. I and one of my friends were the most affected. My husband saw me and assumed that it was an allergic reaction from the pine processionary. He had read an article about it. We went to “Pirogov”. We consulted a toxicologist. He said it happened from the pine processionary. He shared that there are other complaints in Sofia,” Marina added.
The pregnant woman only got away with the profuse rash around her neck and hands, which disappeared in about a week after treatment. There were several more cases of rashes in the village. The local priest who was mowing the grass in the church yard was also injured.
A report was made to the Municipality of Dupnitsa, after which the local authorities reacted quickly and the pines were treated, and the pine processionary nests were removed. Marina’s family expresses gratitude for the quick response from the Municipality of Dupnitsa.
