A 115-year-old monumental building has been slowly but surely collapsing meters from the gates of the Tsarevets fortress for a quarter of a century. The building of the old District Council, as Tarnov residents know, was built in 1910-1911 in less than 12 months according to a project by the local architect. Georgi Kozarov. It is unique with its 32 rooms, wide corridors and a meeting hall. The inscription “Love Bulgaria!” has been preserved on the central staircase. and a plaster model of the lion that greets tourists at the entrance to Tsarevets. The building has the status of a cultural monument of local importance. In 2005, it was sold to the businessman Georgi Valev, whose idea then was to turn it into an elite hotel. After his arrest and conviction, the building changed ownership several times. Over the years, the changing owners have advertised various projects for the use of this building, including turning it into a museum. However, due to various reasons, none of the projects has been implemented so far.
For the upcoming meeting of the Municipal Council, BSP councilor Valeria Doncheva has asked the mayor of the municipality Daniel Panov whether all possible legal measures have been taken to preserve the integrity of this true architectural masterpiece. “I am aware that over the years the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo has corresponded with the owners in an attempt to save the building. Unfortunately, however, these attempts have proved fruitless. What can we do today in the interaction between local and central government to preserve our heritage? What legal options does the Municipality of V. Tarnovo have to influence the owner in order to preserve and preserve this cultural value? What measures has the Municipality taken in the last ten years in this direction? And how can the Municipal Council be useful in solving this problem”, asks municipal councilor Valeria Doncheva.
A reporter’s inspection of the village “Yantra DNES” found that the former administrative building today is in an extremely deplorable condition. The entrance doors and part of the windows are without glass. On the other hand, the surrounding space is full of broken glass pieces, which can cause quite serious damage to unsuspecting tourists walking by. And considering that mothers with small children often sit on the benches in front of the building and let them walk freely, the situation can really turn out to be quite dangerous. The situation in the building itself is no better. A dump has formed meters from the front door. What is the situation in the 32 premises cannot be seen, as access to the interior of the building is impossible. Judging by what can be seen from the lobby and part of the staircase, however, the situation is truly desperate. And the monumental building needs urgent measures to prevent it from becoming another self-collapsing cultural monument.
