Stefan Gaidarov from the 11th grade at the Mathematical High School “Acad. K. Popov” is one of the three laureates who will represent Bulgaria at the European competition for young scientists in September 2024 in the city of Katowice, Poland. His project “Energies in deformed planar lattices. Geometric examination” in the field of mathematics is among the first three awarded in this year’s edition of the competition “Young talents” of the Ministry of Education and Science. The other two developments are in physics – the work of the eleventh-grader Alexandra Petkova from NPMG “Acad. L. Chakalov”-Sofia and in the field of informatics, the work of Delyan Boychev from the 12th grade in PMG “V. Drumev” Veliko Tarnovo. The record 42 projects developed by 55 students participated in the competition for scientific projects in the fields of biology, chemistry, informatics, engineering sciences, mathematics, materials science, medicine, physics, social sciences and humanities, and ecology. It is also part of the accompanying initiatives of the framework programs for scientific research and innovation of the European Union.

MG graduates Ivaylo Kurtev and Dimana Pramatarova will represent our country at the European Youth Science Exhibition, which is to be held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in July 2024 and for which the jury has selected three projects. Two are for students from the Mathematical High School “Acad. K. Popov” in Plovdiv – Ivaylo Kurtev from 11th grade with the project “Investigation of phosphorescent materials obtained by a modified method that does not include co-precipitation” and Dimana Pramatarova from 10th grade – “Integer relations of products of factorials”.

Ivaylo Kurtev is also part of the Bulgarian team in the 58th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad, which is being held in China from April 21 to 26. The Mendeleev Olympiad is among the most prestigious chemistry tournaments in the world and this year it is being held in person. Native high school students will measure their knowledge with more than 120 competitors from more than 30 countries, reports the Association of Olympic Science Teams. The Bulgarian team is composed of: Viktor Lilov (12th grade, SMG), Yavor Hristov (12th grade, SMG), Preslav Georgiev (12th grade, SMG) and Ivaylo Kurtev (11th grade, MG Plovdiv). The leaders of the Bulgarian chemists are Associate Professor Hristo Chanev and Ch. Assistant Professor Daniela Tsekova, PhD, from the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the SU.
