Ukrainian infantrymen will receive combat training in Bulgaria

--

Within the framework of the EU Military Mission in support of Ukraine, our country has declared in Luxembourg its readiness to provide training on its territory to infantry units. This is clear from an official announcement of the Ministry of Defense, dedicated to the participation of the Minister of Defense Atanas Zapryanov in a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

Bulgaria has already declared readiness for the training of combat medics. He also trains Ukrainian pilots in English in Sofia and Varna.

Bulgaria will allow the use of its airspace for the training and training of Ukrainian F-16 pilots, as well as allow passage and residence for the training of Ukrainian infantry and mechanized companies of up to 160 people.

At the beginning of December it was also announced that Bulgaria would allow its airspace to be used for training and training of Ukrainian F-16 pilots. Then GERB-SDS, PP-DB and DPS submitted draft decision in Parliament to provide additional military aid. It was signed by Boyko Borisov, Kiril Petkov, Delyan Peevski, Atanas Atanasov and other deputies from the then majority.

With this decision, which was adopted as a matter of urgency, it was decided to provide Ukraine with “defective, no longer needed or over-standard portable anti-aircraft missile systems and anti-aircraft missiles of various types, located in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Bulgaria, to be used to strengthen the air defense of Ukraine”. Parliament already once decided to send useless anti-aircraft missilesto be repaired and used by the Ukrainian defense.

Again with this decision it was allowed to Bulgarian territory to reside up to four infantry or mechanized companies of the Ukrainian army per year to undergo combat training in our country. Their number should be up to 160 soldiers. This is probably exactly what Zapryanov is offering in Luxembourg.

On Monday, the foreign ministers and defense ministers of the European Union (EU) member states discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Minister Zapryanov has confirmed the determination of our country to continue providing military assistance to Ukraine as long as necessary. “Bulgaria will continue to support the efforts of the EU and NATO to provide Ukraine with all the necessary equipment, training and capacity building in order to strengthen its defense capabilities,” the minister said, quoted by

Currently, over 30 Ukrainian military personnel are being trained in Bulgaria. They study English in Sofia and Varna. This was announced by the Minister of Defense Todor Tagarev in the program “Face to Face” on BTV. He did not specify the direction of training, but it is likely to be pilots and engineering staff.

He informed about the delivered military aid in the past year, which continues in the current year as well. Based on a recent review, additional quantities of surplus weapons will be determined to be delivered to Ukraine.
“The European Instrument for Peace is an important political tool that we must continue to use in our support for Ukraine,” emphasized Minister Zapryanov. He identified military support provided by stockpiles of EU member states as a working approach in response to the urgent needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

At the same time, the Minister of Defense emphasized that for the long-term support of Ukraine, the joint acquisition through public procurement related to the production capacity of the defense industry will play an essential role. In connection with the new European program for the defense industry, which envisages among other measures and financial incentives from the European budget, he called for the implementation of an inclusive approach with the inclusion of the defense industries of all member states, the Ministry of Defense added.
