The Bulgarian national ice hockey team suffered a heavy defeat of 7:1 (1:1, 2:0, 4:0) against Georgia at the start of the World Championship for men in Division II, Group B.
In the other two matches of the first round of the championship, which takes place in Sofia, victories were also achieved by the teams of Belgium and New Zealand.
The first part was relatively equal and although the Georgians created more opportunities, the Bulgarian team stood very dignified on the ice. Ivan Karelin opened for Georgia at 11:25 minute, and for Bulgaria Ivan Khodulov equalized at 15:36 minute after assists from Nikola Chalov and Yanaki Gachev.
In the second half, the Georgians scored two more goals and increased their lead to 3:1, as Vitaly Dziov and Artyom Kozyulin scored.
In the third period, four new pucks fell into the Bulgarian goal, the work of Artyom Kurbatov, Boris Kochkin, Oliver Obolgogiani and Ivan Marov, who distinguished himself with two assists.
Bulgarian goalkeeper Dimitar Dimitrov saved 34 shots, staying on the ice for the entire game. His fellow Georgian goalkeeper Ivan Starostin saved 17 shots.
Tomorrow, again at 20:00, the Bulgarian team will meet the Belgian team.
