There are no registered cases of whooping cough in Kardzhali region.

This was announced by the director of RZI Dr. Viktor Kirchev.

He explained what the symptoms of the disease were.

Symptoms usually appear 7 to 10 days after infection, but it can take as long as 21 days.

Initially, the symptoms resemble a common cold (sneezing, runny nose, mild fever and mild cough). Within two weeks, the cough worsens and is characterized by numerous short-term coughs, followed by a specific inspiratory sound – a reprise. Attacks often result in the expectoration of a clear liquid, followed by vomiting. At first, symptoms occur at night, then increase during the day and can last up to one or two months.

In young infants, the typical respite may not be reached, and coughing fits may be followed by brief periods of respiratory arrest. After this phase, the attacks become less frequent and less intense, and the child’s condition gradually improves (which can take up to three months).

In adolescents, adults and children who are partially immunized, the disease passes milder and with a difference in symptoms. In these groups and in very young babies, the diagnosis of the disease is more difficult.

The disease is most severe in infants. Unvaccinated babies and those whose mothers are not vaccinated have a particularly hard time with the disease. Complications such as pneumonia, encephalopathy (brain disease), seizures and even death can occur.

Dr. Viktor Kirchev advises to immediately seek help from a doctor in case of a prolonged cough.

In addition to whooping cough, there are currently cases of infection with scarlet fever.

For this, seek competent medical help and avoid self-medication.
