Energy workers and miners from TPP “Maritsa Iztok 2” submitted a declaration to the National Assembly demanding the construction of a carbon dioxide capture plant.

The proposal is an opportunity to stop the closure of energy capacities and the dependence of the Bulgarian economy, said Stanimir Georgiev, chairman of the Association “Miners and Energy Workers Together”.

The dissatisfaction is against the adopted changes in the Law on Energy, according to which TPP “Maritsa Iztok 2” should stop working from July 1st of this year.

“There is information that carbon dioxide capture installations are being prepared in many places in the world. If emissions are not paid, the power plants in the Mariska Basin can install them,” said Georgiev. He believes that with the money from the Recovery Plan and sustainability, the state must stand on its own two feet and negotiate these BGN 1.2 billion. “During the coronavirus pandemic, our power plants earned them in one year,” Stanimir Georgiev pointed out.

Radoslav Ivanov, an employee at “Maritsa Iztok” Radnevo gave as an example that Romania, Poland and Sweden have renegotiated the contracts for the plants and are not closing them.
