Young people up to 35 years old will probably have to undergo four months of military training in the military units of the Ministry of Defense.

43% shortage of officers in the Romanian army

Romania is discreetly preparing for the re-introduction of compulsory military service, Digi24 reports. In its material on the subject, the media notes that although there has been a war on the border for two years, and the budget of the Ministry of National Defense has increased significantly, the country is experiencing a huge shortage of personnel. The department’s data show that the deficit of officers is the biggest, where the employment rate is only 57 percent, BNR reported.

The media gives the example of Bulgaria, where the shortage according to this indicator is 26 percent.

“Bulgarian authorities point to malicious information campaigns regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine, but also the poor state of the Bulgarian military system as reasons. The government in Sofia recommends a public debate on the possible introduction of mandatory military training”, notes the media.

In the case of Romania, Digi24 points to the level of salaries and early retirements as the main reasons for the staff shortage.

“Romania does not have a ready infrastructure for the introduction of compulsory military service in order to be able to move to such a solution in the next two years,” said the chairman of the National Liberal Party and former Prime Minister Nicolae Chuca in an interview with Digi24.

Against this background, it became clear that about a quarter of applicants for military service in the Romanian army did not pass the physical fitness test during the spring campaign, which took place from February to April.

According to the data of the Ministry of National Defense, 5,093 positions were announced for competition, for which 6,448 people (20 percent women) applied. 24 percent failed the physical fitness test, 18 percent failed the psychological tests, 12 percent failed the medical examination. As a result, the number of accepted applicants is only 2,626.

The Ministry of National Defense of Romania notes that the difficulty level of the physical fitness test is medium and a candidate aged 18-45 with normal physical development should have no difficulty in passing it.

The second campaign for the recruitment and selection of professional soldiers for the Romanian army is planned for May. The average monthly salary of a professional soldier/sergeant is 5,082 lei (2,032 BGN), to which are added various payments for equipment, transport, rental housing, etc.

Conscription in Romania was abolished in 2007. Before this change, the army numbered more than 300 thousand people. Currently, according to the Ministry of National Defense, about 70 thousand people serve in the armed forces.
