In a declaration to the Holy Synod, the Burgas Association “Orthodox Call” insists on a review of the bishops admitted to participate in the election of a new Metropolitan of Sliven after the death of grandfather Ioanikiy. The reason is that the six candidates did not include Bishop Hieroteus of Agathopol, who was among the two bishops elected in February, but after two complaints of irregularities were received, the election was canceled.
Dozens of signatures in support of Bishop Hierotheus have been sent to the Holy Synod. According to representatives of the “Orthodox Call” association, he was unfairly dropped from the list of candidates for Metropolitan of Sliven. Now, in a statement to the senior clergy, the association is demanding a review of their decision.
Dr. Atanas Orachev:
“We express the hope that this time you, the metropolitans, will understand the facts and will revise the list of eligible bishops to include the Agathopol bishop Hierotei. If not, we are obliged to remind you that we, the Bulgarians, have an ancient tradition of how to welcome intruded and unwanted by lay clerics and bishops”.
The Sliven Diocese supports Bishop Jerotei, said Todor Todorov, co-founder of the “Proud Bulgarians” foundation.
The statute of the Orthodox Church was violated during the cancellation of the elections for the metropolitan of Sliven in February, said subdeacon Angel Katsarov
The “Orthodox Call” association will also send documents to the parliamentary commission on religious denominations.
