DPS-Blagoevgrad proposed the candidacy of Elena Yoncheva for MEP of the party, whose co-chair Delyan Peevski leads the list of people’s representatives in the district and is also nominated for MEP.

“The regional council of the Blagoevgrad DPS made a unanimous decision to nominate Mr. Delyan Peevski as the leader of the list of the Blagoevgrad DPS for the upcoming National Assembly elections. Nominations were also made for members of the European Parliament: Mr. Delyan Peevski, Jevdet Chakarov, Ilhan Kyuchyuk, Iskra Mihailova, Elena Yoncheva, Stanislav Anastasov, Tanzer Yuseinov, Taner Kabilov”, reports the local structure of your Facebook page.

Yoncheva’s nomination can be seen as significant, because Delyan Peevski, who was sanctioned under the global “Magnist” law, is a deputy from Blagoevgrad, not only in this, but also in previous National Assembly.

In the current European Parliament, Yoncheva is an MEP from the BSP. However, she has strained relations with the leader of the socialists, Kornelia Ninova, and the party is not expected to nominate her for a new term.

The nomination as “recognition for everything I have achieved”

“I accept the nomination of DPS-Blagoevgrad to participate in the campaign as a candidate for MEP as recognition for everything I have achieved in the European Parliament for Bulgaria”commented Elena Yoncheva for BTA, but did not directly say that she accepted the nomination from DPS.

“As I have said publicly more than once, the decision whether I will run depends on whether I can continue the battles that I have waged for the last five years for my country and whether I will get support for it, namely – stopping uncontrolled migration; stopping human trafficking (channelling); effective measures against corruption at the national and European level; protection of journalists from censorship and political persecution”, noted Yoncheva. It is not clear how one of the causes – the fight against corruption – can be realized if he becomes an MEP from the party led by Delyan Peevski, who has been sanctioned for corruption under the “Magnitsky” law.

Elena Yoncheva adds that as an MEP she has achieved many successes, such as the adoption of the Migration Pact, which she worked on, a proposal for legislation on media freedom, a proposal to guarantee transparency of media ownership and funding, and the protection of journalists from censorship.

“I will accept support for participation in the European elections, which will allow me to continue working on these important topics for Bulgaria. I will accept support that would give me the freedom to defend them”said Elena Yoncheva.

Yoncheva’s initiatives in the EP overlapped with those of the DPS

“Elena Yoncheva’s initiatives in the European Parliament overlap with those of the DPS. There is nothing surprising in her candidacy, because before the DPS nominated candidates from the civil quota. Iskra Mihailova was a MEP from the DPS for two terms before becoming the party’s vice-chairman Elena Yoncheva and I have stood up for causes in the EP for 5 years.”commented MEP from DPS Ilhan Kyuchuk to Mediapool.

MEP from VMRO Angel Jambazki said that he was surprised by the nomination of Elena Yoncheva as a candidate for MEP from DPS. “I have no comment and I don’t understand her motives,” he added.

The MEP from “Democratic Bulgaria” Radan Kanev also stated that he was surprised by Yoncheva’s nomination and did not understand “such a metamorphosis”. GERB MEP Andrey Kovachev also expressed surprise.

Ninova: Sooner or later, the addicts fade

“Sooner or later addictions fade.” This is how BSP leader Kornelia Ninova commented on the nomination of Elena Yoncheva for MEP from DPS. She did this when registering the party to participate in the upcoming national and European elections.

Ninova explained her “terminated” relationship with Yoncheva precisely with “addictions”. “This explains my terminated relationship with Elena Yoncheva long before yesterday”she added.
