Bulgaria increases the import of cheap dairy raw materials from Ukraine

The Ukrainian association of milk processors plans to double the import of its raw materials to the Bulgarian market. This became clear at the first meeting of the branch organization with the Bulgarian Association of Milk Processors, held in Veliko Tarnovo, BNR reported.

In May, there will be an online meeting between the new acting Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture Georgi Takhov and his Ukrainian colleague Mykola Solski.

The two industry associations are meeting for the first time, and plans are for bilateral cooperation to increase imports of cheaper Ukrainian raw, dry and condensed milk.

“Ukrainian imports of raw materials from enterprises inspected by the European Veterinary Commission are still being carried out on the Bulgarian market,” Arsen Didur from the Ukrainian Association of Milk Processors told BNR.

“In 2023, we have delivered 2,500 tons of dry milk from Ukraine to Bulgaria. Ukraine is able to deliver 5,000 tons of dry milk to Bulgaria. We can deliver over 2000 tons of condensed milk. If Bulgaria needs it and is ready, we can supply other types of production,” he said.

“Bulgarian milk processors buy the raw milk of our farmers, but it is not enough,” commented Plamen Angelov, a member of the Board of Directors of the Bulgarian Association of Milk Processors. “There is at least a 30% shortage of quality raw milk, a raw material that is no longer produced by Bulgarian livestock breeders,” Angelov explained.

At an online meeting in May between the Bulgarian and Ukrainian agricultural ministers, one of the topics is expected to be the increase in Ukrainian imports of raw materials for the Bulgarian dairy industry.
