Venelina Poptoleva continued the excellent run of the Bulgarian women during the European Boxing Championships in Belgrade, after reaching the semi-finals in the 52 kg category and thus guaranteeing herself at least a bronze medal from the championship.
The native boxer convincingly dealt with the resistance of Zeynab Rahimova from Azerbaijan, beating her with a 5:0 judge’s vote in front of coaches Borislav Georgiev and Roman Tsvetkov.
Poptoleva set the pace of the game throughout the match and was visibly superior to her opponent. Our national player boxed equally well from a close and long distance, which helped her reach the clear success.
Thus, on Friday, Venelina Poptoleva will get into the ring again in the Serbian capital for her match against the world and two-time European gold medalist Buse Çakroğlu from Turkey. At stake in their fight will be a place in the final in the 52-kilogram category.
Unfortunately, our representative in the category up to 54 kg Stanimira Petrova said goodbye to her chances of distinction from the championship of the Old Continent, as she did not appear for her quarter-final duel of the competition. The coaching staff of our national team informed that the Bulgarian has not recovered from a viral illness and they will not risk her health. Stanimira has a quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics, with her main goal being to be in top form after three in the French capital.
