MEPs fear Russian interference in the upcoming parliamentary elections in our country, as well as the properties in Bulgaria owned by the Russian authorities.

This is clear from a draft resolution on Russian interference in the upcoming European elections and their effect on the EU. The text for our country is contained in the project of the European People’s Party (EPP) – the first political force in the European Parliament. Among its proponents is the MEP from this group, Andrey Kovachev.

The resolution is due to be voted on tomorrow in a plenary hall in Strasbourg.

[Европейският парламент] is troubled by credible reports of intensified Russian attempts to interfere in the upcoming elections for the Bulgarian National Assembly on 9 June 2024; expresses serious concern about the existence and Russian control of a network of disinformation agents active in social media platforms, academia, NGOs and political parties; is seriously disturbed by the numerous properties on the territory of Bulgaria currently owned by the Russian authorities, some of which are of strategic importance and which serve as centers for Russian influence and impacts on the democratic processes in the country”the text says.

Specific properties are not mentioned. Obviously, one of them is the Kamchia complex, owned by the Moscow City Hall. Yesterday, MEP Alexander Yordanov demanded that it be confiscated, as it is a base for advancing Russian interests in Europe.

Tomorrow, MEPs will vote on another resolution on Russia. It is dedicated to the presidential elections held a month ago. Almost all parliamentary groups consider the elections to be non-transparent. Some of them call on the EU not to recognize Vladimir Putin as a legitimate president.

Andrey Kovachev is among the authors of the text of the EPP and of this resolution.
