With a torchlight procession, which has become a tradition, last night the Armenian community in Varna honored 109 years since the genocide against the Armenian people, which took place within the borders of the Ottoman Empire. This is the first crime of its kind in the 20th century, when one and a half million innocent Armenians were killed.
The procession started from the courtyard of the Armenian Church of Saint Sarkis and passed through the central streets of the city to end in front of the monument dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey, located in front of the Archaeological Museum.
“As torchbearers of our ancestors’ resilience, we stand as guardians of memory. Our stories are woven into the fabric of history and through them we honor the lives lost during the Armenian Genocide. Let’s continue to pass on these stories, ensuring that the truth will last for generations to come,” said heirs of victims of the Genocide.
The tragic events that took place in the 20th century are known worldwide as the Armenian Genocide, and the sad anniversary is traditionally celebrated on April 24. On this date in 2015, the Bulgarian National Assembly adopted a declaration recognizing the “mass extermination” of Armenians.
