A meeting of the Regional Epizootic Commission was held in the Regional Administration – Targovishte,
led by the regional governor Gergana Tsoneva, in connection with the worsening epizootic situation and confirmed outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) in the country.
“Since the beginning of 2024, 1,500 million birds have been destroyed on the territory of the country, and at this moment the map of Southern Bulgaria lights up in red with 12 active outbreaks,” said the director of the ODBH – Targovishte, Dr. Nedko Nedev.
He also explained that the vector of the disease is a genus of ducks, and the infection spreads very quickly.
During the meeting, the commission adopted with a full majority measures to prevent the disease.
Among them are: implementation of enhanced supervision of wild birds in cooperation with ornithological societies, national hunting associations, State Forestry, regional forest directorates, constant joint inspections with representatives of ornithological societies, hunting-fishing societies and state forestry and hunting farms for the presence of sick or dead wild animals migrating or permanently inhabiting the territory of the district.
It is prohibited to organize and conduct markets for all types of domestic animals and birds, including exotic animals, animal products.
Enhanced checks for compliance with the imposed ban will be carried out by the ODBH – Trade, together with the bodies of the OD of the Ministry of the Interior. The outdoor hatching of poultry of all species and categories is prohibited until the measures are canceled by order.
“Biosecurity must be very well maintained, that’s why we appeal to animal owners to be careful and cautious, to respect the measures taken,” said regional governor Gergana Tsoneva.
During the meeting, the members of the commission emphasized the upcoming Easter holidays, appealing to citizens to pay close attention to expiration dates and the products they choose for their meals.
