The high concentration of particulate matter on Tuesday affected most people with respiratory diseases “by worsening air quality”, the Hellenic Society of Pulmonary Diseases said.
Saharan dust appears in Greece between 7 and 20 times a year (an average of 13 times a year), depending on the atmospheric conditions and the amount of dust transported from the African desert, writes BTA.

Skies are expected to clear today as winds shift and move dust and temperatures drop. Yesterday, the daily maximum temperature in parts of the southern island of Crete exceeded 30 degrees Celsius. This is more than 20 degrees above the temperature recorded in much of northern Greece.
Strong southerly winds in the last few days ignited early fires in the southern part of the country, Kathimerini reports.

Although not so spectacular, the phenomenon was also observed in Bulgaria.
