Can you get to know Bulgaria from a bird’s eye view, without the help of a drone or an aircraft? The answer is yes, that’s what panoramic platforms are for. They are built high in the sky and reveal breathtaking views of gorges, snow-capped peaks, dams, river meanders …

The Rhodopi mountain is a record holder in this regard. And the most famous and oldest observation tower in the area is

“Orlovo Oko” panoramic platform

It offers a fantastic view of the Buinovo gorge and the villages of Borino and Yagodina. For this purpose, a metal platform was built, which is about 1.5 meters wide and 5 meters long. So one can calmly walk over the abyss and look at the world from a bird’s eye view and more precisely from a height of 1563 m. The observatory can be reached by a steep road from the village of Yagodina. Treks with all-terrain vehicles are also organized.

Nearby are the Jagodin Cave, the Devil’s Throat and the Trigrad Gorge – some of the most picturesque natural creations in the Rhodopes.

The panoramic platform “The Peak”

Allows you to walk “on the roof of the Rhodopes” in the area of Mogilitsa village.

“She jumps forward into the air from a cliff above Mogilitsa,” says Iliya Godev from The Visitor Information Center of the neighboring village of Smilyan and adds:


“In addition to providing a view from 1,473 meters above sea level, its last meters, which are literally in the air, have a glass floor. So the feeling, not of free flying, but rather of standing freely in the air, is unique. The site was built by the Municipality of Smolyan in 2022. Enterprising people from Mogilitsa and Arda offer access to it with jeeps, UAZs and small trucks.”

This is one of the newest attractions in the Eastern Rhodopes. It was opened in the autumn of last year, but caused mixed reactions. The fear is that the place will attract even more tourist influx, which endangers this place blessed by nature. The glass structure in question is 9 meters long and is designed to accommodate up to 100 visitors at a time. It offers a view not only of the so-called “Bend” of Arda and Kardzhali dam, but also to the ancient fortress “Patmos” and Mount Bezdiven.

Strandzha is a magical mountain with almost pristine nature that is still untouched by tourism. If you visit Petrova Niva area, be sure to look for the signpost to the wooden platform built on the edge of a cliff. From here there is an amazing panorama of one of the most hidden corners of the mountain – the meanders of the Veleka River. And to… Bosnia. But not the state! This is the name of the northernmost mountain hill of Strandzha.

The Iskar gorge in the area of ​​the town of Svoge offers one of the most spectacular aerial views in Bulgaria. One of them reveals the meanders of the Iskar River as if in the palm of your hand. In the western part of the village of Bov, a wooden platform with a height of over 500 m has been built. From here, the river at your feet looks like a thin silver thread, and the houses look like messy matchboxes. The place is also accessible by car, so it is also suitable for people with limited mobility.
