On the threshold of the 2 in 1 elections in Dobrich: What are the expectations and attitudes in the Northeast?

For years people have been talking about the lagging northwest of Bulgaria, but don’t we already have enough reasons to talk more actively about the increasingly lagging northeast? Dobrich region remains permanently distant from the central government not only due to its geographical location, and people quite justifiably consider themselves and the place in which they live and work as forgotten by those who are located on the yellow cobblestones in the capital. The infrastructure is in a deplorable state, depopulation is a permanent trend and not only in the villages, but also in the regional center Dobrich, the investments are only considered in relation to the construction of another shopping center. Dobrich region is also ranked in the unenviable 21st place in the country in terms of average monthly salary for the last quarter of last year, according to statistics. How do the residents of the region view the upcoming parliamentary elections, do they know our previous MEPs and what are their expectations for the next ones?

Tracking the voter turnout in the Dobrich district in recent years clearly shows the tendency that it is always much below the average for the country and among the first three lowest. For the second parliamentary elections, the voters of 8 MIR will vote for five deputies, instead of six before, and this is due to the other clear trend – the decrease in the number of residents at a rapid pace. There can be no talk of large-scale investment projects in terms of infrastructure here – the Dobrich-Varna international road becoming a high-speed four-lane road remains in the realm of wishful thinking for the time being, the road at the entrance to Bulgaria after the Yovkovo border crossing has been under repair for years, and meanwhile almost there are weekly protests by local residents demanding at least the patching of potholes on road sections of 5-7 kilometers.

Accustomed to disturbances and, as an agricultural region, praying for a good omen, the people of Dobrudja still remained optimistic to a certain extent. If it’s drought, he hopes for rain, if it’s rainy, he hopes for sunshine. However, whether the same optimism is also read in the expectations of our next government and how they will remember this during the nine-month “assembly”, “non-coalition”, all wonderful primordial Bulgarian words.

Voters are increasingly aware of the importance of elections for our representatives in the European Parliament. They say that whether we like it or not, Bulgaria is part of a community and who and how will protect our interests is not unimportant.

At the moment, the political centers at the local level show no surprises in the construction of their lists. The battle is rather pre-planned, and both at the national and regional level, major changes are not expected. It is unlikely that the turnout will bring unexpected twists, regardless of the importance of not only the hard cores participating in the electoral process again. The big surprise will be if the party leaders this time still manage to reach the Dobrich region during their election campaign, albeit on our non-European roads.
