A case of whooping cough was registered in the Yambol village of Boyadzhik. The diagnosis was given to a 3 and a half year old child who was treated at the University Hospital in Stara Zagora. This is the first case of the disease for the region, according to the Health Inspectorate in Yambol.

The child was admitted to the hospital a week ago with pneumonia and symptoms of whooping cough and was discharged yesterday, explained the director of the RZI in Yambol, Dr. Radostina Kalcheva:

“This child does not attend a childcare facility, he has three contact brothers – aged 11 months, eight years old and 13 years old, who were also discharged from the infectious disease department in Stara Zagora yesterday, but the diagnosis was not confirmed microbiologically, but they were also whooping cough clinic.”.

The family lived in Italy, 6 months ago they came to Boyadzhik.

“But the mother never took the child to the regular immunizations, which up to this age are four according to our immunization calendar,” said the director of the RZI – Yambol.

The health authorities in Yambol have issued orders to general practitioners to search for all non-immunized children and to give them vaccines in a short period of time.
