Yavor Markov from 11A grade at Ivan Vazov High School of Science and Mathematics – Dobrich won first place at the Linguistics Olympiad for 11th graders. The national round was held at the end of last week in Sofia.

For seven years we have been developing mathematical linguistics in the high school, and from 2020 we participate annually in the national round of the Olympiad, explained Svetlana Vasileva – teacher of informatics at PMG “Ivan Vazov” for Dobruja media group.

The competition mainly includes tasks in which students, having the meaning of words in languages unknown to them – most often of indigenous tribes and peoples of South America, Africa and Australia or even in artificially created languages such as Elvish, invented by Tolkien; they must be able to logically figure out the meaning of other words and expressions in that language.

Yavor Markov won the first place with 87 points out of 120 possible, which is a very high result considering the great difficulty of the tasks.

He has been doing linguistics for a year and a half. He speaks three foreign languages - English, Russian and Spanish. He plans to participate in the Linguistics Olympiad next year as well.
